The Construction process

Once we have completed the design stage, it’s time to begin construction. Constructing a garden is a technical process which can present certain technical and logistical challenges. Our team is made up of qualified tradesmen, apprentices and labourers who have the experience necessary to coordinate the fabrication of each design element seamlessly to create your garden. We also employ the use of registered subcontractors and work with local suppliers who’re reliable and dedicated to building the project the right way, with the right materials.

This entire process is overseen by managing director, Ryan Parker.

Below are a few of our preferred design elements and some details about how we use them and how they function in a garden space.

  • Horticulture & Australian Native Plants

We love to use native plants such as Casuarina, Leptospurmum, Grevilleas, sedges, grasses and various flowers and rainforest plants in our gardens because when we plant locally indigenous plants they thrive and the gardens we build become naturally beautiful and are low maintainence.

Most native plants have quite pretty, decorative foliage which can be used to contrast various design elements such as timber, metal or stone.

Native plants usually do not require a huge amount of water once they’re established which make them a great choice for any garden.

Although we’re quite passionate about locally Indigenous or Native plants, we also think it’s important to utilise various species from other parts of Australia and the world such as Mature Olive Tree’s, Japanese Maple or even a non endemic Tea Tree such as the Leptospurmum Madidum which is indigenous to the Northern Territory but grows well as far south as Coffs Harbour.

  • Soil Cultivation

When we build a garden we always ensure a considerable effort is made to cultivate, regenerate and maintain the quality of the topsoil before our plants are planted.

This includes tilling the soil either by hand or with machinery before the sub grade is established and adding a 200mm layer of topsoil to all garden bed and lawn areas.

It’s important to consider how well certain soil substrates hold and drain water. In some cases sub ground drainage needs to be installed to ensure adequate levels of moisture are maintained.

Once this process is complete we top dress all garden beds with 100mm of fine mulch to mat down and protect the topsoil from erosion and prevent moisture from evaporation on hot summer days.

  • Water features, ponds and natural pools

There are many differnt ways to incorporate water feature o sorts into your outdoor area or garden space. Whether it’s a pond, wetlands or natural pool, water is the heart of the garden. Water attracts insects and all sorts of birds and wildlife which really helps your garden come alive.

  • Natural stone paving

Paving is often the best option when choosing an inert, aesthetically pleasing surface for thoroughfares and outdoor areas. Most of the time, we recommend using natural stone because it is the most beautiful, durable and eco friendly option. When laying natural stone, it’s important to lay the stone on a concrete footing otherwise known as a slab. This way, what ever it is you’re creating, you’ll avoid getting any weeds growing through the joins or cracks from expansion and contraction in the soil below.

We also seal our natural stone with a penetrative sealer which makes for an easily cleanable surface which doesn’t hold water so that it isn’t susceptible to mould buildup and remains beautiful for years to come.

  • Boulder Placement

Placing boulders around the garden is a great way to retain soil on steep embankments and a quick and easy fix in some cases where retaining walls are not needed. We like to strategically place various kinds of boulders and rocks such as sandstone or basalt around our gardens to give some structure to the garden beds and provide a contrast between the various soft green foliages of the plantings.

  • Concrete

At NRTH Landscapes, concrete is one of our staple design elements which is used throughout the construction process. We love to use concrete to build things like pathways, staircases, driveways and decorative bench tops. Concrete is a really versatile, long lasting material which can be moulded, coloured and finished to whichever design style you choose.

  • Decking

Constructing a decking from Australian Hardwood timber is a great addition to any outdoor space. We like to use hardwood timbers because they’re strong, aesthetically pleasing and weather extremely well in the Australian climate.

Hardwoods that’re well suited to the Byron Shire or throughout the Northern rivers region are Spotted Gum, Tallowood, Blackbutt, Stringybark and Ironbark.

When constructing a hardwood decking, it’s important to consider it’s functionality, durability and making it low maintenance. Especially when it comes to an exposed structure. We’ve developed several techniques for constructing a hardwood decking, porch or boardwalk that will ensure it lasts as long as possible, with minimal upkeep. Our deckings are extremely moisture resistant and are installed with adequate air flow and drainage points to ensure they do not rot or require regular cleaning and sealing. Our deckings are built to last.

  • Pergolas

There are many ways to go about an overhead structure and we’ve been building and developing all kinds over the past 20 years. Whether you’re after an architectural finish with mild steel, a big chunky timber arbor, or a fully enclosed structure to cover a decking, we’re able to construct whichever design suits your garden best. Lots of pergolas require Development approval. In this instance, we can manage the process of acquiring a DA so that construction commence swiftly and the pergola is built to engineering standards stipulated within the NSW construction code.

  • Fencing

We’ve built all sorts of fences for all sorts of purposes. Fences can be constructed from natural timber, steel or concrete and blocks. Factoring in additional security such as locks or automated gates is worth consideration. We can provide you with a detailed plan and pricing for a fencing solution that suits your needs.

  • Garden lighting

Garden lighting is like jewellery for a garden. When constructing a garden, it is important to consider including a lighting plan. Garden lighting is generally used to light up structures, trees, ground covers and water features. A good quality, energy efficient outdoor lighting setup will not only look aesthetically beautiful, but it will provide additional security to your home and open up your garden to the evenings, which is where all of those magical moments happen between family and friends. We often favour designer brands like Aqualux and Gardens at Night because their warm white colored lighting not only looks great at night, but the light fittings also in the day time when the lights are switched off.

  • Steel fabrication

We build all kinds of our design elements form mild steel and corten steel. Steel is a great material to use in the garden because it is durable, malleable and has a beautiful architectural finish when allowed to rust. When incorporating the use of steel, it’s possible to achieve a designer look to individual design elements within your garden, generally not achievable with bulky rough structures like timber and concrete. Garden edging, raised garden beds, pergolas, floating seat bench’s and gates are just a few of the design elements we can fabricate with mild and corten steel.
